There’s a permanent wave of joy in this splashy, tune-filled, toe-tapping screen adaptation of the Broadway musical smash! Based on the original 1988 film written and directed by indie fave John Waters, Hairspray hit the stage 2002, taking home a slew of awards and becoming the hottest ticket in town. Now, it’s back on the onscreen, bigger and brassier than ever!
Living in 1960s Baltimore, plump, young Tracy Turnblad (the sparkling Nikki Blonski in her film debut) dreams of dancing on the popular local TV show hosted by Corny Collins (James Marsden), and overseen by scheming producer Velma Von Tussle (a wickedly funny Michelle Pfeiffer), who manipulates the camera to ensure her daughter Amber (Brittany Snow) gets more than her fair share of screen time. But once Tracy shows up at an open call, things begin to change! Whether she's getting her agoraphobic mother, Edna (John Travolta, who must be seen to be believed), out of the house after 15 years, or making every day "Negro Day" on the Collins dance show, Tracy is 12 dance steps ahead of everyone else!
With a cast that includes Christopher Walken, a smokin’ Queen Latifah, Allison Janney and teen faves Zac Efron and Amanda Bynes, Hairspray is one of the most joyous musicals ever to light up the screen.
Bonus features for this 2-disc Special Edition include: Jump to a song with Optional Sing Along Track, Step-by-Step: The Dances of Hairspray, audio commentary with director Adam Shankman and star, Nikki Blonsky, multi-view experience of dance scenes, cast and creative interviews, "Toronto as Baltimore" featurette, deleted scenes and songs, outtakes, trailers, "The Roots of Hairspray": From Buddy Deane to Broadway and more!
