Controversial filmmaker, Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man), breaks out of his recent documentary mode to unspool this fascinating drama, based on the true story of Dieter Dengler (Christian Bale), a fighter pilot who was gunned down and captured during the Vietnam war. Herzog takes us through the unbearable torture and horrors of war, making Dengler’s daring break-out from the camp in which he was interned all the more remarkable. Bale, who has been turning in breathtaking performances since the age of 12 (Empire of the Sun) and beyond, truly staggers the imagination with his work here. Not to be missed.
