Winner of three 1989 Academy Awards® (Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Denzel Washington, Best Cinematography, and Best Sound), here is the inspiring, true story of the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts, the first black voluntary regiment to fight for the North in the Civil War. Based on the letters of Robert Gould Shaw, portrayed by a fine Matthew Broderick (Election), the young white Northerner who trained and led the regiment. In addition to Washington and Broderick, the glorious cast also includes Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby) and Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride).
