On his way to finding a legend...he will become one.
Acclaimed filmmaker Zack Snyder (Watchmen) makes his animation debut with this fantasy family adventure based on the beloved books by Kathryn Lasky. The film follows Soren (Jim Sturgess, Across the Universe), a young owl enthralled by his father's epic stories of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole, a mythic band of winged warriors who had fought a great battle to save all of owlkind from the evil Pure Ones.
While Soren dreams of someday joining his heroes, his older brother, Kludd (Ryan Kwanten, Flicka), scoffs at the notion, and yearns to hunt, fly and steal his father's favor from his younger sibling. But Kludd's jealousy has terrible consequences—causing both owlets to fall from their treetop home and right into the talons of the Pure Ones.
Now it is up to Soren to make a daring escape with the help of other brave young owls. Together they soar across the sea and through the mist to find the Great Tree, home of the legendary Guardians of Ga'Hoole—Soren's only hope of defeating the Pure Ones and saving the owl kingdoms.
The amazing cast of voice talent assembled for this wonderful adventure includes Sam Neill (Daybreakers), Geoffrey Rush (Elizabeth: The Golden Age), Helen Mirren (The Last Station), Hugo Weaving (The Wolfman), Abbie Cornish (Bright Star) and more.

Fresh:
-Ty Burr, Boston Globe, November 24, 2011Rotten: We're left with something gorgeous, turgid, and emotionally impenetrable -- less a movie, more an Imax screensaver.
-Tim Robey, Daily Telegraph, October 22, 2010Rotten: Any kids' film that features owl zombies, Hitler Youth-esque adversaries and an opening fifteen minutes that evokes Pier Paolo Pasolini's Salo deserves credit for being ballsy.
-Simon Miraudo, Quickflix, October 21, 2010Fresh: It's all very weird sometimes, but engaging: a nice half-term treat for younger children.
-Peter Bradshaw, Guardian [UK], October 21, 2010

And most beautifully illustrated contemporary movies, I have seen. I was very disappointed by the negative ratings, so I wrote this review. Of course, you must realize that the underlining totalitarian plot [Neo-Nazi] with it's violence may be disturbing to young children. But in all a great movie, and great artistry.
